“I got to be a bride, not just a carer”

How Jessie May helps Max’s family make memories that matter

Ten-year-old Max White has lived with complex medical needs since birth. Diagnosed with multiple conditions including epilepsy, respiratory challenges, and mobility issues, Max requires round-the-clock care and uses a wheelchair. He’s been supported by Jessie May nurses since he was just a few days old.

“I still don’t have a full diagnosis for him,” says mum Jess. “He had a tracheotomy when he was smaller, he’s on oxygen overnight, and takes lots of medications. We’ve had Jessie May in our lives from the very beginning.”

Jessie May’s hospice-at-home service has been a lifeline for the family, offering both clinical expertise and emotional support. “I am 24/7 on Max duty,” Jess explains. “I’m always Max’s mum and carer. I’m never Jess. But when Jessie May comes, I can go and be me – meet friends, take my daughter Freya out for tea or spend time with my husband. Funnily enough, I met my husband thanks to Jessie May – they were looking after Max while I went out with him!”

One of the most powerful moments came on Jess’s wedding day. With nurse Andy by their side, the family was able to celebrate without the usual stress of care logistics.

“I couldn’t have planned my wedding without knowing who would suction Max, do his meds, or get him ready. And since Andy has known Max most of his life, I knew I could trust him to take care of everything, as always.” Jess says. “Andy walked me down the aisle, pushing Max. I wanted Max to walk me down, and Andy made that happen. Max even carried the rings. It was the first time I felt like a bride instead of just Max’s carer.”

Andy, who has supported Max through hospital stays, home visits, and family events, reflects on the day with pride:

“Being part of Jess’s wedding was incredibly special. I’ve seen Max through so many stages – from intensive care to joyful moments at home but helping him be part of his mum’s big day was an honour. It’s what Jessie May is all about – making sure families can make precious memories together.”

The support extends far beyond milestone moments. Jess describes Jessie May as “a massive lifeline,” especially during winter months when Max is vulnerable to infections. “He’s spent two or three Christmases in hospital. Winter is awful – pneumonia, flu, RSV. I don’t plan Christmas until the last minute because I never know if he’ll be well.”

But Jessie May brings festive joy even when plans are uncertain. Their Christmas party is a highlight for the whole family. “It’s one place I know Max can see Santa,” Jess says. “Other grottos aren’t always accessible, but Jessie May makes it possible. Freya, Max’s sister, gets to join in too – she wouldn’t have those opportunities without Max and Jessie May.”

Jessie May helps families like Max’s make memories, even in the hardest times.

Give the most precious gift of all, letting children just be children, this Christmas.

This Christmas, give the gift of care. Please help families spend the festive season making memories, not facing their worries alone.
