đ˘ Last night, the House of Commons held an important debate on hospice and palliative care, led by Paul Kohler MP. MPs across parties discussed improving care for both adult and child services, highlighting:
- đ° The ÂŁ295m funding gap in childrenâs palliative care.
- đ Calls for clarity on the ÂŁ26m for childrenâs hospices in 2025/26.
- đ´ The âpostcode lotteryâ causing disparities in care across the UK.
At Jessie May, weâre pleased to see palliative care receiving this level of attention. The debate covered many important areas, and while we feel childrenâs hospice care was well represented, however, there was a strong focus on end-of-life care. We want to reiterate that, for us, palliative care is so much more:
- đ Itâs about creating happy memories and supporting children to live joyful lives, no matter how short.
- đ Itâs about providing vital support to families in their own homes, where they feel most comfortable.
- đ Itâs also about offering bereavement support to our families for as long as they need us.
The reality is that palliative care is not receiving the attention it deserves from the governmentâthe system needs major overhauls.
In the meantime, we rely heavily on public support to continue our work. Whether youâre a business, in a community group or an individual, please get in touch to explore the many ways you can support us.
