“We’d be lost without them”

Four-year-old Isla has faced more medical challenges in her short life than most people do in a lifetime. Born at just 24 weeks, she spent over 13 months in hospital before she was able to come home. Her early years were marked by complex surgeries, long stays in intensive care, and a terrifying cardiac arrest caused by COVID, which left her with brain damage and chronic lung disease.

“She’s got hydrocephalus, global developmental delay, chronic lung disease, and a leaky heart valve,” says mum Georgia. “She’s non-verbal, uses a wheelchair, and needs help with almost everything. But she’s also sassy, independent, and has a wicked sense of humour.”

Despite the complexity of Isla’s condition, Georgia describes her daughter as “thriving” – thanks in part to the support of Jessie May; they have been by their side since Isla was a baby.

“We’d be lost without them,” Georgia says. “They understand Isla’s needs without me having to explain everything. When they visit, I can go out, walk the dogs, ride my horse, or just pick up a prescription – things that are impossible when I’m juggling both girls and all of Isla’s care.”

Jessie May nurses have become a lifeline for the whole family, including Isla’s older sister Darcy, who also has cystic fibrosis. “When Isla was little and Darcy wanted to go swimming or do something fun, Jessie May made that possible. They gave us time together that we wouldn’t otherwise have.”

One of Georgia’s favourite memories is from a Jessie May Christmas party. “There’s a photo of Isla sitting up in front of an inflatable snowman – it was the first time she’d sat up properly. We were all like, ‘Don’t distract her!’ It was such a special moment.”

Christmas is often unpredictable for the family. “Last year was the first time Isla was actually home for Christmas,” Georgia shares. “She’s usually in hospital or comes out just before. That’s why I do all my shopping early, just in case.”

Jessie May helps bring festive magic even when plans are uncertain. Their Christmas parties and pantomimes offer accessible joy for children like Isla and their siblings. “So many events aren’t wheelchair-friendly or just too hard to manage. But Jessie May makes it possible. They think about the whole family.”
