As summer is here, many families with children who have complex medical needs face unique challenges. On BBC Bristol Radio, Steve Wiltshire, Jessie May’s Nurse Care Leader, shared how the charity is helping these families across the South West.
Families with a child who has complex needs often find summer activities limited. Jessie May goes beyond supporting the child with medical needs; they also focus on the entire family, offering crucial support and activities that benefit everyone.
Lois Cox, Jessie May’s End of Life Nursing Leader, explained how inclusive spaces make a big difference. These spaces allow children with complex needs to participate they might otherwise miss and provide a place for families to connect facing similar challenges. They are designed to accommodate various needs, ensuring that everyone, including siblings, can enjoy themselves.
Steve discussed Jessie May’s events, such as those organised in partnership with Gympanzees. “We have events like Noah’s Ark coming up, where the whole family can spend the day together”, Steve noted. ” Our nurses will be there to support both the child with complex needs and their family.”
Beyond these events, Steve touched on how Jessie May provides indirect support to siblings. “Having a child with complex needs often means siblings don’t get as much one-on-one time with their parents, “he said. “By creating opportunities for families to spend time together in a supportive environment, we indirectly help siblings feel included and valued, giving them the attention they need.”
Steve pointed out how these inclusive activities matter. “For families, something simple like a day out can be a big challenge. Providing a safe ,supportive environment makes a huge difference,” he said.
having been with Jessie May for nearly eight years, Steve shared the emotional aspects of the job: “Caring for children at the end of their lives is tough, but building memories and supporting families makes it incredibly rewarding”
