It's World Book Day!

To celebrate World Book Day 2020, we asked the Jessie May team (and some supporters) a little bit about their favourite children’s books.

Whether it’s a book from their childhood, one they read to their own children, or even some that our Nurses read to Jessie May children – the answers vary!

Chief Executive

Kiss Goodnight Sam – Amy Hest

This was a favourite to read to my son when he was little, he would always shout out when the main character was after a kiss from Mrs Bear – some amazing memories!

Swindon Team Nurse

The Jolly Postman

“It’s so much fun to discover something new every time I read it! Brings back memories of my childhood, and I loved sharing it with my children too!”

Community Partnerships Officer

Harry Potter – JK Rowling

“JK Rowling created a world where anyone can escape to anytime that they want; filled with butterbeer, Quidditch and magic!

I recently lent my nephew my Gryffindor scarf – so watch out for a little Harry running around today!”

Jessie May Volunteer

My Life as a Pup – Sarah Delmege

“I actually bought this book, aged 7, at my Primary School World Book Day sale. At the time I was obsessed with dogs as I had just got my first dog. It had interesting facts about dogs, had dog friendly recipes, along with tips and tricks of owning a dog. I loved to imagine what was going on in dogs’ minds, especially my own, and I have fond memories of enjoying the book for many years over my childhood.

In fact, I now have a dog named Poppy after the main character!”

Swindon Team Nurse

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – Michael Rosen

“It’s fun to repeat sounds and rhymes and is familiar to all!”

Marketing & Communications Officer

Room on the Broom – Julia Donaldson

“I have loved reading ever since I was little, and it has grown even more since becoming an Aunty. When I go home to visit, Room on the Broom is always the top recommendation for Aunty Charlie to read before bed – and my favourite thing is to see my nieces mouthing along to the words!”

Trust, Grants and Statutory Fundraiser

Bob Bushtail’s Adventure – A.J Macgregor

“I was obsessed with this book when I was younger, and made my dad read it again and again…and again.

More often than not it sent him to sleep faster than it did for me!”

Swindon Team Choice

Wonky Donkey – Craig Smith

“It is hilarious! We love to listen to each other read it – especially new team members as a challenge! It’s good fun to hear accents – our wonderful student Katie is our current favourite as her beautiful Welsh accent brings the book to life!”
